The Role

As part of its strategy to provide a world-class student education and experience, the School of Computing is looking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic Lecturer in Cyber security and Dependability. The position is a 12 month fixed-term position from (approximately) July 2026 to July 2027. Come and join us here in our Urban Science Building based in the Newcastle Helix.

We are keen to hear from applicants who have experience in the delivery and administration of teaching in a Higher Education environment. We are looking for academics at all stages of their career, from early career looking for your first opportunity to experienced Lecturers, who can contribute to our teaching offering and help shape our growing school.

The specific responsibilities of the position are to:

  • Contribute to the delivery of core modules, particularly in Cyber Security and Dependability, though we will also consider applicants with specialisms in other fields but an interest in Cyber Security. Candidates will have experience of delivery using appropriate instruction methods and other pedagogic work, and in marking and assessing students’ work.
  • Supervise students’ projects and dissertations and supervise students and staff engaged in higher degree work by research.
  • Undertake, to a degree commensurate with career stage and experience, curriculum development work, planning, development and evaluation of courses and course materials, and supervise course provision.
  • Participate in the administrative and management processes of the School. Contribute to the general life and work of the School of Computing, including helping to foster the academic community, being a good colleague, and contributing to the organisational and academic management of the school.
  • Represent the discipline on School, Faculty or University committees/groups.
  • Carry out administrative duties as assigned by the Head of School and the School Executive Board.

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

All levels

  • Experience in delivering excellent teaching in Cyber Security and Dependability in particular but also an interest in emerging trends in Computing Science
  • Evidence of teaching or assessment experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level
  • Evidence of working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent skills in communication, both verbally and in written forms to create and present effective learning materials.
  • Effective time management and prioritisation skills to balance teaching, research and administration.
  • Presentations at relevant conferences and workshops

In addition, for Grade G Lecturers

  • Education experience - evidence of proven track record of teaching and assessment, introducing new insights to educational programmes, including technology enabled learning and experience in delivering laboratory/field sessions.

Desirable

  • A developing or established portfolio of high-quality research and/or pedagogic scholarship
  • Evidence of undertaking a senior leadership role in the management of an academic unit.
  • Experience of supervising and mentoring junior colleagues and PGR students.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A first degree and PhD in a relevant field. Candidates nearing completion of a PhD will also be considered
