Mechanical Maintenance Technician
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Contract Type: Temporary with the option to go Permanent

Join our client's Estates & Facilities team at as an Electrical Maintenance Crafts person,

providing a high-quality, customer-focused maintenance and installation service across a large, varied academic and residential estate.

What you will need

• City & Guilds Electrical Craft Certificate or NVQ Level 3 in an Engineering Maintenance/Electrical discipline.​
• 18th Edition (BS7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations).​
• City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection & Testing of Electrical Installations) or equivalent inspection and testing qualification.​
• Full UK driving licence.​
• Strong fault-finding ability on electrical building services and systems.​
• Attitude: hard working, polite, customer-focused, safety-conscious, willing to learn and adaptable.

Sectors that tend to transition well into this environment include Higher Education, Armed Forces and wider Public Sector due to similar cultures and procedures. Candidates with slightly less experience but the right core skills and clear commitment to learning and development will also be considered.

Role Description:

• Planned Preventive Maintenance and reactive defect repairs (routine and emergency) across electrical building services and equipment.
• Working on internal and external electrical systems, including lighting and power distribution, HVAC supplies, fire alarm systems and building control systems.
• Carrying out minor electrical installation and improvement works across a wide range of university properties, from listed buildings to modern facilities.

• Producing and issuing electrical test and inspection certificates in line with legislation and recognised bodies (e.g. NAPIT).
• Using diagnostic approaches, including the Building Energy Management System, to resolve issues and optimise performance.
• Isolating electrical building services, issuing isolation certificates and Permits to Work, and reinstating supplies safely after works.

• Organising your own workload and, when required, supervising Maintenance Assistants, Apprentices or other staff.
• Accurately recording work and updates on the maintenance system (PlanOn and future digital systems), ensuring service levels and H&S compliance.​
• Participating in an out-of-hours on-call rota to support a 24/7/365 service across the estate (additional £160 on-call payment in place).

Desirable extras

• NVQ Level 3 over a broader range of electrical activities or related pathways.​
• Computer literacy for modern maintenance management systems.​
• Membership of NAPIT and basic mechanical knowledge/skills to support minor associated mechanical works.
