We are looking for an Apprentice Design Engineer to join our technical team and support the delivery of a range of construction and engineering projects.

Monday - Friday 8.00am - 4.00pm. Lunch can be taken between 12:30pm and 1:15pm.

About the Apprenticeship:

We are looking for an Apprentice Design Engineer to join our technical team and support the delivery of a range of construction and engineering projects.

This apprenticeship combines:

  • Academic study (college with the potential to progress to university)
  • Hands-on experience in the workplace
  • Training in industry software and digital design tools
  • You will develop an understanding of engineering principles, while learning how design concepts are developed and translated into detailed 3D models and technical information used in construction projects

Our engineering teams focus on developing engineering solutions, while technicians help transform these designs into coordinated digital models and drawings used during the construction process.

What You’ll Learn:

During your apprenticeship you will gain experience in:

  • Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • 3D design and modelling software such as Revit
  • Building performance and analysis tools such as IES Virtual Environment
  • Engineering design development and coordination
  • Working on real construction projects with experienced engineers and technicians

There will also be opportunities to explore different career paths within the business, including:

What You’ll Be Doing:

As part of the team, you will:

  • Assist with the development of engineering design models and drawings
  • Support engineers and technicians on live construction projects
  • Help coordinate design information between different disciplines
  • Learn how digital tools are used to support building design and construction
  • Contribute to improving digital engineering workflows and processes
  • You will also be encouraged to explore new technologies, including how AI and advanced digital tools can support the development of engineering design information

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, segregation of resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO). European Norm (EN).
  • Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
  • Apply scientific, technical or engineering principles.
  • Apply problem solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
  • Organise, plan and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
  • Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
  • Produce job specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals and specifications.
  • Provide support and guidance for handover of work to stakeholders. For example, checklists, product or process status, access to supporting documents.
  • Record information - paper based or electronic. For example, energy usage, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, checklists.
  • Follow standard operating procedures.
  • Follow manufacturer's instructions. For example, safe instructions for use of products, processes and machinery.
  • Apply quality assurance and control principles and practices. For example, conduct physical checks, take samples, inspections or tests.
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques.
  • Apply team working principles.
  • Communicate in writing with others for example, stakeholders, colleagues, and managers.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Use information and digital technology. Comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations and policies.
  • Carry out and record learning and development activities.
  • Apply equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English Language or English Literature (grade 4 or above)
  • Maths (grade 4 or above)
