The Role

 

This is a three-year post, with a primary focus on developing and delivering teaching to medical students undergoing year 3 of the new community-based programme (NUCom). This is an innovative programme in which 12 students (initially) spend most of their time in general practice and the community rather than in hospital. Teaching is planned to take place on Mondays and candidates will need to be available on this day. Teaching Fellows are involved in other aspects of medical education such as selection and recruitment, examining and undertaking educational research projects.

Academic staff are not expected to be discharging all of the activities all of the time and the actual duties and activities that academic staff are expected to carry out will be determined by the Head of Academic Unit.

This role is 0.2 FTE, 8 hours per week. The approximate start date for this role will be 1 July 2026.

Key Accountabilities

 

As this will be a developmental post, the post holder will be expected to complete the Newcastle University Certificate (or higher) in Medical Education. There will be financial support towards course fees and other development needs.

 

This post is aimed at primary care doctors who wish to develop their skills and knowledge in the field of Medical Education. It is expected that the candidate will also be working clinically as a locum, salaried or partner GP.

 

The appointee will join the primary care team of GP Lecturers, teaching Fellows and GP trainees at the School of Medicine, led by Professor Hugh Alberti (Sub-dean for Primary and Community Care) and will be supervised by Professor Alberti and Dr Nikki Franc (co-leads of NUCom).

 

Specific tasks will include:

  • To manage own teaching, scholarly and administrative activities,
  • To teach as a member of the team,
  • Carrying out teaching within a clear and established programme,
  • Developing teaching materials,
  • Contributing to decisions affecting the NUCom programme.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Good team working skills and ability to collaborate with other disciplines,
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Effective organisational skills,
  • Evidence of interest in teaching.
  • Evidence of experience in teaching.
  • Knowledge and experience of the MBBS curriculum.

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching the year 3 curriculum in GP and/or in Trusts, including the mental health, child health and reproductive health modules,
  • Experience of implementing innovations,
  • Experience of developing teaching materials.

 

Attributes and Behaviours

Aspiration to develop as a clinical academic.

 

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Medical degree,
  • Current registration with the GMC and licence to practise,
  • MRCGP (or about to complete prior to the post commencing).

Desirable:

  • Educational qualification.
