Apprentice Assistant Traffic Signals Design Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Regional Traffic Signals Team as an Apprentice Assistant Traffic Design Engineer.

Newcastle City Council is the Traffic Signals lead authority for the Tyne and Wear region. We carry out traffic signals installations and maintenance in Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland County and Durham.

The purpose of Traffic signal installations is to provide efficient, reliable and safe passage for all road users at junctions and crossing points, in order to improve people’s daily lives and their longer-term heath, wealth and happiness. It’s about people and neighbourhoods and providing the right places to enjoy their lives.

What will I be doing?
This is an exciting time to be joining the Traffic Signals team and an Apprentice Assistant Traffic Signals Design Engineer working alongside the Urban Traffic Management and Control team as we work to deliver major transport improvement schemes, not just in Newcastle, but also working with partners in the other North East local authorities.
The Regional Traffic Signals Service works on a range of projects across the region.

Once qualified the role will involve:
  • Undertaking traffic signal engineering studies from feasibility through to detailed design.
  • Making use of a variety of traffic modelling software, including LinSig and Paramics microsimulation to engineer computer simulation models of junctions and network layouts.
  • Preparing design drawings, plans and work specifications.
  • Keeping up to date with new developments and initiatives including UTMC and Extra Low Voltage systems.

What will I receive in return?
We’ll support you to learn new skills, and to thrive in your role, undertaking an apprenticeship as Civil Engineering Technician Level 3. The role is full time (37 hours per week) for a fixed term of 3 years.

At Newcastle City Council our apprentices are paid a percentage of the salary for the role the apprentice is working towards. This is always at least National Minimum Wage and increases each year as you develop your knowledge and skills.

This apprenticeship role is working towards the full role of Assistant Traffic Design Engineer, N7 - £36,363

In Year 1 you will be paid 55% of the salary rate, or National Minimum Wage, whichever is higher. In Year 2 you will be paid 60% of the salary rate, or National Minimum Wage, whichever is higher. In Year 3 you will be paid 65% of the salary rate, or National Minimum Wage, whichever is higher.

Whilst we are unable to guarantee a post in the role apprentices work towards, all our apprentices are supported to apply for suitable vacancies when they complete their apprenticeship so that they can make use of their new skills and qualifications.
